My Cozy Cottage Reading Nook

I have always admired homes that had a charming little reading nook with a cozy chair to relax and read a book.  I have a small house and thought it would be impossible to create one in my home.  However, after doing some research, I discovered  there are very many clever, creative, and stylish ways to create a cozy reading nook. At the end of this post, I added some links to some of the inspiring resources I found on Pinterest.

Tips for Creating a Reading Nook

First, a reading nook must include three essential elements:

  • Seating
  • Table
  • Lighting
Second, find a space inside your home to create a reading nook. If it's the warmer seasons of the year, you may want to create an outdoor reading nook too!
  • An unused corner of a room
  • A bay window
  • The end of a long hallway
  • An unused closet
  • Beneath a staircase
  • A balcony
Next is the fun part. Decorate the space.
  • Define the space with a colorful rug or cozy chair
  • Add book storage
  • Add a lamp
  • Decorate a window with curtains, sheer panels, or blinds to adjust lighting
  • Embellish the space with a decorative pillow, a flower vase, or table clock
  • Paint the walls or add wall paper

My Cozy Cottage Reading Nook

I created my little reading nook in a corner of my living room that had a long window. The space was too small for large furniture and I didn't want to block the window, so this corner remained unused for a long time.  With some furniture and decorations I had collected from thrift stores, I tried arranging the space with different pieces until I settled with the current arrangement that felt could function as a cozy cottage reading nook.
